Why You're Not Sacrificing Anything (You're Just Choosing)
Alright, we're going to have a little conversation while I double scoot my pre-workout in preparation for the gym, because I don't want to be here, I've taken a couple days off and I have no desire to train, and I'm walking in anyway, which is where this whole thing starts.
And the fact of the matter is, man, there are going to be times where you're going through your journey and you lose motivation or desire, especially in a situation like me, where staying healthy and having at least a mediocre physique is part of my job, right? Imagine how well the information I deliver would be received if I was a fat, lazy asshole.
My kids are at home with a pile of booster packs waiting for me. And part of the routine that we've created with them over the last week or so is getting into this Pokemon trading thing.
I've built a collection in about a week and I genuinely enjoy it, so much so that it's worth about $11,000 now.
Yes, my children are missing out on the time that they would have with me to open Pokemon packs after school before they go to bed, do their homework, all that stuff.
But the key word with sacrifice that I think a lot of people miss is sacrifice implies that you're not getting anything in return.
If I choose to train in the gym rather than go home and sit on my ass and open Pokemon cards, I get an outcome, right? I'm improving my body. My physique gets better, my health gets better, my work gets easier to sell because I look like someone who does what he says.
A lot of guys I talk to, especially the men, talk about all the things that they're sacrificing for their family, for their kids, for their wives, for their jobs, for their etc, and none of that, my friend, actually qualifies as a sacrifice.
What it actually is, is a preference you've already acted on. If you decide that you are going to sacrifice your time with your kids so that you can prioritize your health and go to the gym, what you're doing is choosing to spend that time doing the thing that you want to do for the outcome that you want.
The reason why in the Bible God values sacrifice so much is because what he's asking you for is to demonstrate your commitment, your faith without any expectation of getting anything in return, and oftentimes, what he asks for is you to give up the thing that's most valuable to you, the way he tested Abraham by asking for his own son.
And I think the reason why this distinction is so important is because most of the times the things that we do are driven by outcomes that we desire.
And this is exactly why in Matthew chapter six, he talks about praying in private behind closed doors, not standing in the synagogues and announcing your faith and the things that you're doing for God so that everyone can see.
In my opinion, the greatest form of evangelism of anything that you do, whether it be your commitment to Jesus Christ and God, whether it be your service to others, whether it be you being a parent, a friend, a husband or wife, it's about loving them so much that you want to give to them and serve them without any expectation of return.
And in my opinion, it's even worse if you position that as a sacrifice, as if you were doing it for the right reasons, when in fact, you got to benefit the whole time.
And so if you notice the way that I evangelize when it comes to my message and the things that I do, it's not about telling people how they should live. It's not about printing Jesus Christ on my shirt and having a cross tattooed on my neck for the world to see.
