Am I Natty? The Honest Answer and How My Physique Actually Got Built

Am I natty? The fact that people are asking me this question is funny. No. I haven't been natty since I was about 22 years old, and the useful part of that answer is the sequence of how it happened, not the admission itself.

So the story behind my physique is, when I got out of the army in 2010, I was probably 160 pounds or so, give or take. That is the real starting line.

My dad, he did time in Folsom, got out of the prison, fixed his life, obviously learned how to lift weights, which is common with guys who come out of that environment, because the iron is the one thing in there that works the way it says it will.

He was five foot six, five foot seven, just completely yoked, tatted up, you know, basically a smaller version of me.

That period of time when I got out of the army, my father and I, we spent a lot of time together, and it was the first stretch of my life where him and I actually became close, with the gym holding it together.

During that period, I remember I went to the gym with him and he pulled this little bottle of pills out of his bag. The word dragon was printed on the label, and he told me to take a couple.

Those were prohormones, which were over the counter compounds your liver converted into an actual anabolic hormone after you swallowed them. You bought them at a nutrition store, next to the protein powder, so nobody treated them like what they were.

I gained like 35 pounds over a period of like five, six months. At 160 pounds with a body that had never seen anything like it, the response was enormous, and I read that response as proof the stuff was safe, so I took more, and then more after that.

Then the side effects showed up. Gynecomastia, which is breast tissue growth in men driven by the ratio of estrogen to androgen in your blood rather than by estrogen alone.

What I was taking was aromatizing, meaning part of the dose was converting to estrogen inside my body, and nothing on that bottle told me that or told me what to do about it.

And that's what led me into learning more about antibiotics, learning more about steroid use, understanding exactly what I was putting into my body. The education came after the damage.

Prohormones fizzled out as the FDA intervened, and the next deployment I had to Afghanistan was when I really went on to my first cycle. I was deployed with some joint special operations guys, and being out there with those dudes humbled the shit out of me.

You know, I was about 195, 200 pounds, and I figured I had already arrived at big.

They're in the gym just squatting 500 pounds. And then going out on the X, climbing through the fucking mountains doing dismounted ops in the middle of fucking the mountains of Afghanistan.

So I hopped on cycle while I was out there. During that deployment in Afghanistan, I gained probably another 20 pounds or so, under conditions nobody gets at home, because there is no alcohol, no social calendar, food on a schedule, sleep on a schedule, and nothing to do between missions except lift.

So I walked away from that thing, lean 220 pounds, just completely jacked.

The gap between those two phases is the whole lesson. The first one I did blind, on something sold to me as a supplement, and I paid for it with tissue that does not go away on its own. The second one I did knowing the compound, the dose, and what it converts into.

If you are going to use anything, find out what it aromatizes into before the first dose, not after your nipples start hurting. That is the entire difference between the 22 year old version of this story and every version of it since.
