You Cannot Lead Until You Learn to Follow
The reason most men cannot lead their families is not because they lack confidence or because their women are difficult or because the culture has made it impossible. It is because they have never submitted to anything themselves, and you cannot give someone a thing you have never learned to hold.
Start with the full picture before zooming in on any one part of it.
There is a chain that runs through every healthy family structure. God sits at the top of that chain, then the man, then the woman, then the children. Every person in that chain is simultaneously leading someone and following someone, and the whole thing only functions when each link in that chain is actually doing both. The moment a link decides it only wants to lead and not follow, the chain breaks at that exact point. That is not a spiritual metaphor. That is how authority structures work in every domain, from the military to a hospital to a construction crew. You follow before you lead, and the following is what teaches you what leading actually costs.
Now zoom in on the part most men miss.
Authority and responsibility are not two separate things you can pick and choose between. They are one thing. They are the same thing from two different angles, and you cannot carry one without the other. Authority without responsibility is just control. It is someone telling other people what to do while taking no personal weight for the outcome, and every person within range of that kind of authority can feel it. Not in a vague intuitive way. They can feel it because the evidence is everywhere. The decisions are self-serving. The accountability deflects. The cost always lands on someone else.
A woman who is being asked to follow a man like that is not being irrational when she resists. She is responding correctly to real information.
The average man who wants to lead his home has thought a lot about what he wants from that role and not very much about what it requires of him. He wants his word to carry weight, and he wants his direction to be trusted, and he wants his family to follow his lead without constant pushback. Those are not unreasonable things to want. The problem is that trust is not given because someone has the title of husband or father or head of household. Trust is built through a track record of absorbing cost on behalf of the people you are responsible for, and a man who has never submitted himself to anything greater than his own preferences has no track record like that because he has never been tested in the way that builds it.
This is where the theological piece is not just spiritual decoration. It is doing real mechanical work in the model.
When a man submits himself to God, something called sanctification begins, which is the slow process of a person's desires and instincts being reshaped toward something beyond themselves. The man who has gone through that process, who has actually surrendered his will to something that outranks him, develops a particular quality that is very difficult to fake. He makes decisions that cost him personally. He holds to standards even when breaking them would be easier and nobody would know. He tells the truth when a comfortable lie was available. And the people around him, including the woman he is asking to follow him, can see the pattern of those decisions accumulating over time.
That is the foundation the trust is built on. Not the declaration that he is the leader. The pattern.
Jesus said it plainly in the garden the night before his death, in Matthew 26:39, and the weight of that moment matters. This was not a philosophical statement made from a position of comfort. This was a man facing death, and the prayer he prayed was not my will, but yours be done. The person Christians hold as the highest model of leadership on earth, the one who commanded the wind and raised the dead and turned the entire moral history of civilization, led by submitting first. Not as a strategy. Not as a posture. Because submission to the Father was the actual source of his authority, and he knew it.
That is the model. And it inverts the way most men think about this.
Most men treat submission as the opposite of strength, as the thing weak people do when they have no other option. The model here says something different. It says submission is the prerequisite for real authority, and a man who has not submitted himself is not a strong leader who just needs a woman to get with the program. He is a man who has skipped the step that would have actually prepared him for the role he wants, and he is now asking someone else to pay the cost of that skipped step while he holds the title.
A woman who will not follow that kind of man is not defiant. She is discerning.
So if you want to lead your home, the sequence matters. You do not start with your wife. You start with God, because the alignment that makes you trustworthy comes from that relationship first and works its way outward from there. The man who is genuinely submitted to God becomes a man whose decisions have an anchor outside his own appetite, and that anchor is what makes him safe to follow, because she knows his judgment is not just serving himself.
You cannot ask someone to trust you further than you have trusted something yourself.
That is the thing most men trying to lead have never stopped to sit with. The posture they are demanding from their wives is the exact posture they have never taken. And until they take it, they are not leading. They are just insisting.
