Why Your Failures Are Preparing You for Everything You Prayed For

Most people think success arrives as a single event. A door opens, the right person calls, the algorithm picks you up, the idea finally clicks, and everything changes in that one moment, and so they sit there scanning the horizon for the breakthrough that will make all the suffering make sense, and while they wait, they miss what the suffering is actually doing.

The real chain works differently, and it works in a direction most people don't expect. Every failure you go through is not just an obstacle between you and the thing you want. It is the thing that makes you capable of holding the thing you want once it arrives. The failures are not the cost of entry, because they are actually the training itself, the thing that builds the person who can handle what comes next.

To understand why, you need to understand how the brain actually builds the capacity to sustain success, because that capacity is not something you're born with and it's not something that drops from the sky. It is built one disappointment, one correction, one recovered mistake at a time.

A literature review published in Medicina in 2019 by Sisto and colleagues tried to do something that had never been cleanly done before, which was to pull together all the different definitions of psychological resilience across disciplines and find what they had in common. What they found was that resilience is not a trait you either have or you don't. It is a dynamic process that develops through exposure to adversity and the active effort to adapt. The key word there is "through." Not "despite." Through. The adversity is not something resilience merely survives and leaves behind, because the adversity is the raw material resilience is actually constructed from, which is a completely different relationship than most people assume.

This is the part that reframes the whole conversation. When Josh describes his own trajectory, he puts it plainly: I just kept going, I just kept getting up, I just kept trying new things. There is no secret method hidden in that sentence. There is only the refusal to stop and the willingness to adjust. And yet that refusal and that willingness, repeated hundreds of times, are what built the internal infrastructure that made the eventual breakthrough sustainable.

Nobody talks about the part where breakthroughs happen to people who aren't ready for them all the time, and those breakthroughs collapse. The business grows too fast for the founder who never learned operations through smaller failures. The relationship arrives for the person who never learned emotional regulation through harder ones. The opportunity opens for someone who never built the decision making muscles that only get built by making bad decisions and surviving them.

Which is exactly the point Josh is making when he says: I kept going, I kept going, I kept going, and then all of a sudden when I had this breakthrough, it was almost as if I already had all the knowledge and tools that I needed to keep the train on the tracks, right? It wasn't like this epiphany or this gift that he just came down and touched me with. What the breakthrough actually did was reveal the abilities he had already been assembling the whole time without realizing it was happening, which is a very different thing than handing him something new.

There is a clean parallel for this in developmental science. Adolph and Franchak published a study in Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews in 2017 looking at how infants learn to walk. What they documented is that the average infant, before taking their first successful steps, has already fallen roughly 17 times per hour across hundreds of hours of practice. They fall, they adjust, they try a slightly different weight distribution or foot placement, they fall again. No infant is sitting in a crib waiting for the magical ability to walk to suddenly arrive. The ability is assembled from the accumulation of micro corrections, each one built on top of a failure. By the time the child walks across the room, they are not performing a new skill. They are expressing the total architecture of everything they learned by not walking successfully thousands of times before.

That is what long term resilience actually looks like at the neurological level. The brain doesn't just store lessons from failure as abstract memories. It rewires prediction models, it adjusts stress response calibration, it builds what researchers call adaptive flexibility, which is the ability to shift strategies under pressure without collapsing into panic or paralysis. Taylor and Carr, publishing in The Journals of Gerontology in 2021, found that among older adults, the single strongest predictor of psychological resilience was not wealth, not social status, not even social support, but something called personal mastery, which is the internal sense that you can influence outcomes through your own effort, and personal mastery is not something that accumulates through victories but rather through the cycle of failing at something and then deciding to do something about it rather than walking away. Every time you try, fail, adjust, and try again, you are depositing evidence into your own nervous system that you are the kind of person who can handle what comes next.

This is why the waiting posture is so destructive. When people sit around scanning for the breakthrough, they're looking for this magical thing or this benchmark in time that's going to suddenly change everything. And that framing does two kinds of damage simultaneously. First, it devalues the current struggle by treating it as meaningless overhead rather than the actual construction phase. Second, it creates a psychological dependency on external events for internal readiness, which means even if the breakthrough comes, the person lacks the internal scaffolding to sustain it.

There is a term in pain and expectation research called the nocebo effect, which Colloca reviewed in the Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology in 2024. The nocebo effect is what happens when the expectation of a negative outcome actually produces that negative outcome in the body. If you believe a pill will cause nausea, it often does, even if the pill is sugar. The inverse of this applies to how people frame their own failures. If you interpret every setback as evidence that you are not meant to succeed, your stress physiology responds to that interpretation, so cortisol stays elevated and recovery drags out and motivation hollows itself out from the inside, and the failure becomes more damaging not because of what happened but because of what you believed it meant.

Flip the frame, and the same failure produces a different physiological outcome. Not because you tricked yourself into feeling good, but because the interpretation changes what the nervous system does with the experience. A failure interpreted as data gets processed, stored, and integrated. A failure interpreted as identity gets lodged in the stress system and festers.

This connects to another line of research that illuminates why the accumulation process works even when you can't see it working. Mischel, Shoda, and Rodriguez published their now famous delay of gratification work in Science in 1989, showing that the ability to wait for a larger reward instead of grabbing a smaller immediate one predicted outcomes across decades of life. But the less cited part of their work, and the part more relevant here, is that the children who succeeded at delaying gratification were not just passively waiting. What they were actually doing was deploying active strategies the whole time, looking away from the marshmallow, singing to themselves, reframing the treat as something abstract rather than something edible, which means the waiting itself was a form of effortful cognitive labor rather than anything like passive endurance.

More recent work by Raghunathan and colleagues, published in Developmental Psychobiology in 2022, added physiological data to this picture, showing that children who successfully delayed gratification didn't just behave differently. Their cardiac and respiratory regulation patterns were measurably different during the waiting period. They were regulating their physiology, not just their behavior, and that regulation capacity is something that gets trained over and over through situations that demand it rather than something a person simply arrives with.

This is why pain and discomfort change the equation so dramatically. Cerqueira-Nunes and colleagues published work in Neuroscience Letters in 2025 showing that inflammatory pain literally shifts reward preference in rats from larger delayed rewards to smaller immediate ones. Pain makes the brain favor the quick fix. So when you are in the middle of a hard season, when you are failing repeatedly and it hurts, your neurobiology is actively pushing you toward the shortcut, the quit, the "this clearly isn't working" narrative. And every time you override that impulse, not through gritting your teeth but through adjusting your approach and continuing forward, you are strengthening exactly the circuits that will allow you to manage the pressure of large scale success when it arrives.

Because that's the thing nobody tells you about getting what you want. It comes with its own set of pressures, decisions, and temptations to self sabotage. The person who got there through a lucky break and the person who got there through years of repeated failure and adjustment are sitting in the same chair, but they are operating with completely different internal hardware. One of them has a nervous system that has been trained through thousands of micro corrections to stay regulated under pressure, to choose the longer play, to recover from setbacks without spiraling. The other has no such training, and the new pressures will reveal that gap immediately.

It was more so like all these failures and all these lessons and hardships and tests, if you will, that I went through to get up to this point of success prepared me for the moment where now when it's time to go big, I had everything I needed. What that sentence is pointing at is a genuine neurological phenomenon, because the preparation and the suffering are not two different phases but rather the same phase experienced from two different time perspectives, where from inside the middle of it the experience registers as suffering, and then from the other side it reads as preparation, even though it was always both of those things at once.

So the practical application of this is not "just keep grinding" as a vague motivational instruction, because the application is much more concrete than that. When you fail, ask one question: what did that teach me that I didn't know before? Write it down. Not in your head, on paper, because the act of articulating the lesson forces your brain to process the experience as data rather than as identity. Then adjust your approach based on what you learned and go again, which is the whole cycle in its simplest form, where you fail and extract something from it and adjust and continue, and every revolution of that cycle is adding to your readiness in ways you will not be able to see until the moment arrives.

That's not how it ends up happening. Rather than a lightning bolt, it arrives as a slow accumulation that reaches a tipping point you can only recognize after you've already passed it. And then you wake up one day and you're like, oh, I'm sitting here balls deep in everything that I prayed for. And the reason you can stay there, the reason it doesn't collapse, is that the version of you sitting in that chair was built by every single failure that tried to keep you out of it.

The failures were never obstacles to clear out of the way, because they were the actual path itself, and there was never a version of the journey that went around them.
