Why No One Is Coming to Save Your Health (Extreme Ownership)
Why No One Is Coming to Fix Your Health
The only effective way to take complete and total control over your outcomes in your life is to stand from a place of being informed. Everything downstream of that, the choices, the results, the direction your health goes over the next ten years, depends on the quality of information you are standing on.
So if you're being misinformed or misled or you're getting partial information, then you're not able to effectively make decisions for yourself from an educated standpoint.
Information feeds decisions, decisions feed actions, and actions feed outcomes, which means the whole chain rests on that first link, and break it and everything after is guesswork dressed up as choice.
Most people never look at the first link, and instead they go straight to the last one, the body fat, the fatigue, the bloodwork that came back flagged, and they go hunting for someone to blame or someone to fix it, and the search itself feels productive because it has motion in it.
But the outcome was set upstream, in what you were told and what you believed, long before you ever walked into an appointment.
I think about this the way I think about navigation. If your map is off by two degrees at the start, you do not notice for the first mile. You notice three hundred miles later when you are in the wrong country entirely, and no amount of walking faster fixes it, because the problem was never your effort, it was always the map itself, sitting wrong from the first step.
The same holds for bad health information, where a slightly wrong idea about protein, or seed oils, or how much cardio actually does, compounds quietly over years of consistent effort in the wrong direction.
Which is why the correction has to happen at the input level, not the effort level.
There's a part people resist, though, and it's this: everything that happens in my life is my responsibility. I absolutely own the fact that if I'm unhealthy, it's my job to fix that problem. Not my doctors, not my insurance company, not the American medical system, not the pharmaceuticals, not capitalism, and not the president, right? It's me.
That is Jocko's extreme ownership applied to a body instead of a battlefield. Everything is my fault, even when it's not.
People hear that and think it means blaming yourself, and it does not. Blame is backwards looking and it just sits there. Ownership is forward looking and it hands you the controls, because the second you decide the problem is yours, you also decide the solution is available to you.
The practical weight of this shows up in the exam room. Your doctor has somewhere between seven and fifteen minutes with you, and they are working from training that may be a decade old, inside a system that pays for treating disease and not for preventing it. None of that makes them bad at their job. It makes them a narrow input, and if a narrow input is your only input, your map has gaps you cannot see.
I'm a narrow input too, doing this research from my own limited seat, and sometimes I'm wrong. Sometimes there's new studies that come out that make me change my stance on things, and when that happens I say so, because a source that never updates is not a source worth standing on.
So here is what that actually looks like in practice. Pick the one health question that matters most to you right now, the one you have been outsourcing, and go read about it from three places that disagree with each other, not three places that confirm what you already think, but three that genuinely clash.
Then notice what all three agree on anyway. That overlap is usually the solid ground, and the places they fight are where the evidence is genuinely thin, which is useful to know before you bet your next five years on one side of it.
Do that with one topic per month and in a year you have twelve areas where you are no longer guessing.
