Why "It Depends" Is the Honest Answer to Almost Every Health Question
Most of the time, the answer to the questions that you guys have is it depends.
That frustrates people, because they came for a yes or a no, and what they got sounds like a dodge, like I'm hedging so I can never be wrong.
I'm not hedging, because there's so much nuance and context that come into play when you're answering health specific questions, training, nutrition, et cetera, and there are so many variables at work that most of the time I just, I can't give you a black or white answer.
Take a question as simple as "how much protein should I eat." To answer it properly I need your bodyweight, your lean mass, how hard you're training and how often, whether you're in a deficit or a surplus, your age, your kidney function, what your digestion is like, how much of your protein is coming from whole foods versus powder, and what you'll actually stick to for the next six months.
Change any one of those and the number changes.
Now stack that same problem onto creatine, fasted cardio, seed oils, melatonin, cold plunges, training to failure. Every one of them has a handful of inputs that shift the answer, and the person asking usually only knows one or two of their own inputs off the top of their head.
So when someone online gives you a flat number with total confidence, they haven't solved that problem. They've skipped it, picking the answer that's true for the median person in some study population and handing it to you like it was written for your body.
Sometimes that works out, since the median is the median for a reason, and if you're close to the middle on most of your inputs, the generic answer lands close enough to be useful.
But you only know whether you're near the middle if you understand what the inputs are. Which is the actual thing I'm trying to give you.
And this is exactly why with my content, you'll notice that rather than me just like drawing a line in the sand and saying this or that, yes or no, what I'm doing instead is I'm giving you the knowledge, the context, the biology, like how it works on the back end so that you're able to make informed decisions using critical thought rather than just following blanket rules and generalizations from some asshole on the internet, right? Because your situation is going to be different than his or hers and the next guy's.
Think about it like a recipe versus knowing how to cook. A recipe works perfectly until you're missing an ingredient, or your oven runs hot, or you're cooking for someone with an allergy. Then it's useless, because it never told you what the butter was doing or why the oven temperature mattered.
Someone who understands the mechanism swaps the ingredient, drops the temperature twenty degrees, and the dish still comes out fine, because what mattered to them was never the printed steps but the reasoning underneath those steps. Health advice runs on that same logic, where the rule people cling to is really just the recipe, and the biology underneath it is the actual cooking.
So the practical move, when you hit a piece of advice online, is to ask what has to be true about a person for this to work. If the answer is obvious and narrow, like "this assumes you're training five days a week," you can immediately check whether that's you. If you can't tell what assumptions the advice rests on, that's usually a sign the person giving it hasn't thought about them either.
The second move is to notice when "it depends" is followed by nothing. "It depends" is only honest if the person then tells you what it depends on. If they stop at the hedge, they're using the phrase as a shield.
There is a lot more of this inside the free community, and it is genuinely free, so if you want somewhere to ask the follow-up question the men's group is here: https://www.skool.com/jh-iron-forge-brotherhood/about
If this is the kind of information you want access to on a daily basis, the community is free and there are full courses on training, nutrition, hormones, and supplementation inside. You can ask questions and post your own labs and get feedback from me and from the community.
