The Sauna Isn't Doing What You Think
Most people step out of a sauna feeling like they just did something good for their body, and they're right, but probably not for the reasons they think.
The two most common beliefs about saunas are that they raise testosterone and that they flush toxins through your sweat. Both of those ideas are wrong in a meaningful way, and understanding why they're wrong is actually the fastest path to understanding what the sauna is genuinely doing to your physiology.
Start with the testosterone belief. It's not crazy on its face, because heat stress does affect the endocrine system, and the endocrine system does produce testosterone. So it seems like a reasonable chain. But when researchers put 17 men through a dry sauna at 80 degrees Celsius for one hour, twice a day, for seven straight days, measuring hormone levels throughout, testosterone didn't move. Neither did FSH or LH, which are the upstream hormones that tell the body to produce testosterone in the first place. The whole axis was quiet.
The sweat detox claim has a similar structure. There are trace amounts of heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury detectable in sweat. So the claim isn't invented from nothing. But the quantities are too small to constitute meaningful detoxification. Your liver and kidneys are the organs built for that job, running continuously, processing far larger volumes than sweat ever could. Sweat is more than 99 percent water. Calling it a detox mechanism is like saying a wet paper towel is doing the work of a water treatment plant.
So now you know what the sauna is not doing. Here's what it actually is.
That same 1986 study that found zero testosterone change found a 16-fold increase in growth hormone in the male participants. Not a small uptick. Sixteen times baseline. And that single finding changes how you should think about the entire tool.
Growth hormone is something called a peptide hormone, which is a signaling molecule that your pituitary gland releases in pulses throughout the day, and its job is to drive tissue repair, fat metabolism, and recovery. More growth hormone means faster recovery between training sessions, better body composition over time, and stronger tissue remodeling. It's not just a bodybuilding concept. It's a core recovery mechanism.
The protocol that produced that 16-fold spike was specific: four 30-minute sessions in a single day, with 5-minute cool-down periods between each one, done on an empty stomach, at temperatures between 176 and 212 degrees Fahrenheit. That's a meaningful distinction because it wasn't the passive act of sitting in heat that drove the response. It was a structured heat stress protocol designed to maximally challenge the body's thermoregulatory system without letting it fully recover between rounds.
There's an important caveat here though, and it matters for how you program this. Your body adapts to heat stress over time, which means the growth hormone response diminishes with repeated exposure. The more frequently you do it, the smaller the signal becomes. This is called thermal adaptation, and it's the same principle as why a cold plunge feels progressively less intense the more you do it. Your nervous system recalibrates to the stimulus. For the growth hormone benefit specifically, the research suggests once a week or less to keep the signal strong.
That's a very different recommendation than what the cardiovascular and brain health data shows, and this is where the story gets more interesting.
A separate line of research tracked 2,315 Finnish men between the ages of 42 and 60 for a median of nearly 21 years, measuring sauna frequency against mortality and disease outcomes. The men who used the sauna four to seven times per week had a 63 percent lower risk of sudden cardiac death compared to the men who used it only once a week. They also had 40 percent lower all-cause mortality. Sessions longer than 19 minutes showed significantly better outcomes than shorter ones.
From that same cohort, the men using the sauna four to seven times per week had a 66 percent lower risk of developing dementia and a 65 percent lower risk specifically of Alzheimer's disease.
These are observational numbers, not controlled trials, so the mechanism isn't proven in the same way a drug trial would prove it. But the effect sizes are large enough to be worth taking seriously, and the proposed mechanisms are credible. Repeated heat exposure acts as a passive cardiovascular workout, something called hemodynamic stress, which is the process of your heart pumping harder to circulate blood toward the skin for cooling, your blood vessels dilating, your cardiac output increasing. Over time, that repeated mild stress appears to improve vascular function in ways that look a lot like what low-intensity aerobic exercise does to the heart.
The brain protection may partly follow from that same vascular improvement, and there's also a theory that heat shock proteins are involved, which are repair proteins your cells produce in response to thermal stress, and which help clear damaged or misfolded proteins. Misfolded proteins are part of what accumulates in Alzheimer's disease. This is theoretical territory, but it's a plausible pathway.
The practical takeaway is that the protocol depends entirely on what you're trying to accomplish, and those two goals actually require different frequencies that point in opposite directions.
If you're using the sauna for cardiovascular health and long-term brain protection, the data points toward four or more sessions per week, at least 19 minutes per session. That's the frequency that produced the most dramatic risk reductions in the Finnish cohort.
If you're using it specifically for the growth hormone response, you want the opposite. Less frequent. Longer individual sessions. Empty stomach. Let your thermal sensitivity reset between exposures so the signal stays strong.
Most people treat the sauna as one thing with one protocol. But it's actually two different tools depending on how you use it, targeting two different systems, requiring two different approaches to frequency and timing.
The sauna works. It just works best when you're clear about which mechanism you're actually trying to drive.
