The Sauna Isn't Doing What You Think

Your sweat is more than 99 percent water, and the trace minerals that make up the rest are nowhere near enough to constitute detoxification in any meaningful sense. That job belongs to your liver and your kidneys, which filter your blood continuously and at a scale that sweat could never match. The detox narrative around saunas has no real scientific support, and that's worth saying plainly before we get into what the sauna actually does.

Same goes for testosterone. There was a study published in 1986 where 17 volunteers sat in a dry sauna at 80 degrees Celsius for one hour, twice a day, for seven days. At the end of that week, serum testosterone had not changed in any statistically significant way. Neither had FSH or LH, which are the hormones upstream of testosterone that signal the testes to produce it. The whole hormonal axis was essentially unmoved.

So if you have been thinking of the sauna as a testosterone tool, the evidence does not support that.

But here is where it gets interesting, because that same 1986 study found something else entirely. In male subjects, growth hormone increased by 16 fold under a specific protocol. Not a little. Sixteen times baseline.

To understand why that matters, you need to understand what growth hormone actually does in an adult. Growth hormone is a signaling molecule released by the pituitary gland that drives tissue repair, fat metabolism, and the maintenance of lean muscle mass. It is not just for growing taller as a teenager. In adults it is part of the system your body uses to recover, rebuild, and stay lean, and its natural production declines with age.

The protocol that produced that 16 fold response was four 30 minute sessions in a single day, with 5 minute cool downs between each one, done on an empty stomach, at temperatures between 176 and 212 degrees Fahrenheit. That is a specific and demanding stimulus, not a casual session.

Now, one of the most important things to understand about growth hormone is that the body adapts to repeated identical stressors. This is called something called habituation, which is where your body recognizes a familiar challenge and stops mounting a full stress response to it. In the context of sauna and growth hormone, this means the spike you get from your first several sessions will shrink over time if you keep the same protocol at the same frequency.

That is not a flaw in the stimulus. It is just how adaptation works, the same way a new training program stops producing gains once your body has adjusted to it. The practical implication is that for growth hormone specifically, using the sauna once a week or less preserves the magnitude of the response. More frequent use for this particular goal diminishes returns.

But frequency is exactly where the cardiovascular and brain data tell a completely different story.

A study following 2,315 Finnish men over a median of nearly 21 years tracked sauna habits alongside health outcomes. The men using the sauna four to seven times per week had a 63 percent lower risk of sudden cardiac death compared to the men going only once per week. They also had a 40 percent lower risk of dying from any cause. Session length mattered too. Sessions longer than 19 minutes consistently produced better outcomes than shorter ones.

The same cohort was later analyzed for cognitive outcomes. Men using the sauna four to seven times per week had a 66 percent lower risk of dementia overall and a 65 percent lower risk of Alzheimer's disease specifically, compared to the once per week group.

The mechanism behind the cardiovascular benefit is something called passive heat conditioning, which is where repeated thermal stress trains your cardiovascular system the way moderate aerobic exercise does. Your heart rate rises, your blood vessels dilate, cardiac output increases, and over time the system becomes more efficient and more resilient. The analogy is not perfect but it is close: sitting in a sauna puts a mild aerobic demand on your heart without requiring your muscles to do mechanical work, and doing that repeatedly over years appears to have a real protective effect.

The dementia reduction is less mechanically settled, but the leading hypothesis involves something called heat shock proteins, which are molecular chaperones your cells produce in response to thermal stress. Heat shock proteins help refold damaged proteins and clear cellular debris, which is relevant because misfolded protein accumulation is a feature of both Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. Whether the sauna's effect on dementia risk runs through this pathway or through improved cerebrovascular health or some combination is not yet fully resolved, and that distinction matters for anyone trying to understand the mechanism rather than just the association.

What is clear is that the frequency requirement for cardiovascular and brain outcomes is the opposite of the frequency requirement for growth hormone. For your heart and your brain, you want four or more sessions per week at 19 minutes or longer. For growth hormone, you want once per week or less, longer sessions, on an empty stomach, with cool downs between rounds.

These are two genuinely different tools that happen to use the same box.

Most people pick a sauna habit without knowing which of these goals they are optimizing for, and end up doing something in between that partially serves neither. Three sessions per week blunts the growth hormone response without being frequent enough to match the cardiovascular outcomes from the Finnish data. That is not a reason to avoid the sauna. It is a reason to decide what you are actually trying to accomplish before you set the schedule.

The sauna is not a passive health ritual. It is a stimulus that produces specific physiological responses based on how it is used, and the protocol is the difference between getting what you came for and just getting hot.
