Sell Them What They Want
Most coaches lose the sale before they ever make an offer, and it happens in the first two minutes of the call.
Someone tells you what they want and instead of meeting them there, you start redirecting. You explain what they actually need. You introduce complexity. You position yourself as the expert who sees deeper than they do. And technically you are right about everything you just said, but the call dies anyway because the person sitting across from you did not come to be corrected.
Here is the full chain before we get into the mechanism.
Someone reaches out to a coach because they feel a gap between where they are and where they want to be. That gap has a surface layer, which is the thing they can put into words easily, and it has a deeper layer, which is the actual reason the gap matters to them. They communicate the surface layer because it is concrete and safe and socially acceptable. They are motivated by the deeper layer because that is where the real pain lives. When you respond to the surface layer with skepticism or redirection, you break the only thing that made them willing to talk to you in the first place, which is the belief that you understand them.
That is the whole system. Now here is where most coaches go wrong inside it.
There is something called the stated goal gap, which is the distance between the goal someone tells you on a call and the transformation they are actually paying for. The person who says they want to lose 20 pounds is not really buying a lower number on the scale. They are buying what that number means in their actual life. A man who spent two decades building his career and let his body go is not thinking about macros when he gets on that call. He is thinking about the look on his wife's face. He is thinking about whether his kids feel proud of him when they look across the table. The 20 pounds is just the version of the story he knows how to say out loud.
If you sell him macros and meal plans, you are answering the stated goal and missing the transformation entirely.
This is not about manipulation. It is about listening with enough depth to hear what someone is actually buying, and then speaking to that instead of the surface version they handed you as a placeholder.
The reason coaches miss this is understandable. They built expertise by learning the real mechanisms behind the goals people bring them, so when someone says they want to lose 20 pounds, the trained brain immediately starts cataloging the hormones and sleep quality and metabolic rate and all the factors the client is not even aware of. That knowledge is real and it matters and eventually it is exactly what will help this person get results.
But the first call is not a physiology lecture. It is a trust transaction.
The person on the other end of that call made a decision that it was safe enough to tell you what they want. That decision is fragile. The moment you signal that what they want is wrong or naive or incomplete, you have not corrected their goal, you have invalidated their judgment, and people do not hire coaches who make them feel like their thinking is off before a single session has happened.
What works instead is meeting them exactly where they came in, then listening for what is underneath.
When someone says I want to lose 20 pounds, the right move is to take that goal seriously, ask questions that pull out the deeper layer, and let them tell you what the transformation actually means. They will tell you about the energy they want back. They will tell you about the version of themselves they have been putting off becoming. They will tell you about the relationships that would change if they felt different in their body. You do not have to guess at the real motivation. You just have to create enough safety that they share it.
That is the whole conversation shift. Honor the stated goal. Draw out the real one. Sell to what you find underneath.
The evidence for why this matters shows up in the numbers directly. A close rate of roughly one in five calls is not a pricing problem or a credibility problem. It is almost always a gap problem, meaning the coach is speaking to one version of what the client wants while the client is measuring the conversation against a completely different one. When the conversation matches what the person is actually there to buy, the math changes. Three or four out of five is not a different product. It is the same product sold to the real reason someone wanted it.
There is a practical sequence to how this works in real time.
You use the stated goal to get them in the door. That is the thing they typed into the search bar, the thing they put on the intake form, the thing they lead with in the first thirty seconds of the call. Honor it immediately and completely. Do not introduce nuance yet.
Then you ask questions that go one layer deeper. Not clinical questions about their sleep or their cortisol. Questions about what changes for them when the goal is reached. What does life look like. What becomes possible. What stops being hard. Those answers are the real transformation and they will tell you exactly what to sell.
Then once they are your client, once they trust you because you delivered on the thing you promised, that is when you bring in the deeper solution. The hormones, the sleep, the metabolic work, all of it. They are now listening to you as someone who has already proven they understand what matters. The science lands completely differently in that context than it does on a cold sales call.
The error is not in knowing too much. The error is in leading with it before trust exists.
Most coaches think the sale is made when they prove their expertise. It is actually made when the client feels understood, and those two things are not the same moment in the conversation. Expertise closes the gap. Understanding opens the door. And if the door never opens because you led with the correction, the expertise never mattered.
