Do These 3 Things Before Taking Any Supplements

If you're a guy spending hundreds of dollars on supplements every month, but you still can't lose fat or build muscle, you're still feeling exhausted and you still look the same after months of trying, I'm about to show you exactly why those supplements are keeping you stuck and what actually moves the needle for your results.

The supplement industry is a $40 billion machine and their business model depends on keeping you as a customer, not necessarily getting you results.

Because once you get results, once you understand how your body actually works, you don't need most of what they're selling.

Look at what they're actually selling and the pattern shows up fast. Pre-workout for energy, when the fatigue is coming from four hours of sleep. Test boosters, when your hormones respond to training and food and rest. Fat burners, when body composition changes because of a calorie deficit held over months.

None of those products are lying about the outcome you want. They're just selling you a supplement for a problem that isn't a supplement problem.

And part of the reason it works is because you keep looking for shortcuts instead of learning the basics. You'd rather spend $300 on magic pills than spend 30 minutes understanding how your body actually works.

I wasted years and thousands of dollars doing the exact same thing before I figured this out, so I'm not talking down to you here.

There are three foundations that determine about 95% of your results. And once you understand this, you'll see exactly where supplements fit in, which is that last 5%.

Sleep, protein from whole food, and training with real intensity. Everything else is a rounding error until those three are handled.

Start with sleep, because this is the one most guys skip past entirely.

When you sleep seven to eight hours, you cycle through deep sleep and REM sleep several times, and each stage does different work. Your body releases growth hormone in pulses tied to those deep stages. Most of it happens between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., or at least that's the window I've always seen it framed in, and I'll be straight with you, I have never found a study that pins it to those specific clock hours. What I do know is that the release is tied to your deep sleep, and you cannot get deep sleep if you are awake.

Testosterone rises across the night through that same kind of staged process, and it peaks in association with your first REM period, which means the later hours of sleep matter just as much as the first ones. Andersen and Tufik documented that the nocturnal rise in testosterone is directly linked to sleep architecture, and that fragmented or shortened sleep blunts it.

Leproult and Van Cauter restricted healthy young men to five hours in bed for one week and measured daytime testosterone drops of 10 to 15 percent, and that kind of decline is what you'd expect from a decade of normal aging, except it happened in eight nights.

So when guys tell me they only sleep five hours a night, I can pretty much guarantee their testosterone levels are significantly lower than they should be.

And then there's cortisol, which is your stress hormone. It's supposed to be low at night and high in the morning, and chronic short sleep flattens that rhythm out so you carry more of it through the day than you should.

Chronically elevated cortisol drives fat toward the abdomen specifically, and Björntorp traced that to a higher density of cortisol receptors in visceral fat combined with the insulin resistance that follows. Mann and Thakore found the same abdominal pattern in people with sustained cortisol elevation from depression.

I've also had it explained to me for years that cortisol eats muscle tissue and that you need deep sleep to clear it out of your system. In my experience with clients, the guys sleeping five hours look softer and recover worse, but I have never seen a study land cleanly on either of those two claims, so I'm not going to sell them to you as fact.

Kaczmarek and colleagues reviewed the sleep and performance literature in 2025 and found that extending sleep improves reaction time, strength output, and recovery markers across athletic populations, which is the part that is actually well established.

So when you're only getting four to five hours and then trying to compensate with pre-workout and caffeine, you're basically trying to chemically override what your body's telling you it needs.

It's like driving a car with the emergency brake on and wondering why you're not going any faster.

Nutrition is the second foundation, and this is where the supplement math falls apart the fastest.

Every BCAA supplement, every amino acid complex on the shelf, all of it already exists inside whole food protein, and a chicken breast alone gives you all the branched chain and essential aminos you'd need, while eggs and beef round out the rest of what those bottles claim to offer.

When you eat about 200 grams of protein from whole food sources, chicken, beef, eggs, fish, dairy, you're getting complete proteins with all nine essential amino acids.

A pound of beef also carries roughly five grams of creatine naturally. It has carnitine, it has zinc, B12, iron.

The supplement companies take one of these compounds, isolate it, put it in a pill, and charge you 50 bucks for what you could get from a $10 pound of ground beef.

There's a second layer to this that has nothing to do with the nutrient list. When you eat whole protein, about 30% of those calories get burned just in the digestion process, which is called the thermic effect of food. Your body spends energy breaking apart the protein structure and turning those amino acids into something usable, and that cost is far higher than the roughly 5 to 10 percent you pay on carbs or the 2 to 3 percent you pay on fat.

Protein powder is already broken down, which is the whole selling point, and it's also why it costs your body less to process.

Whole food also sends signals to your brain that you're full and satisfied. Chewing, stomach stretch, the slower release of gut hormones as solid food moves through you. Jahanbani and colleagues describe those satiety signals as part of the regulatory system that determines how much you end up eating over a day.

Supplements don't trigger these same signals, which is why you can drink a protein shake and still be hungry an hour later.

The third piece is training, and this is the one that makes the other two mean anything.

Training is the only thing that's actually creating the stimulus for growth and adaptation.

When you lift weights and progressively overload, you create mechanical tension in the muscle fiber, and that tension gets detected at the cell level and converted into a chemical signal. Your body reads it as a demand it needs to be better prepared for.

So it starts a process called muscle protein synthesis, where it takes the protein that you eat, and it uses it to build new muscle tissue.

Without that tension, the amino acids you ate get used for maintenance and repair and then oxidized for energy. Nothing is wasted, but nothing is added either, because you never gave your body a reason to add anything.

If you have all the building materials in the world, but never actually started construction, would you have a house? That's what supplements are without proper training.

So when a guy tells me he's stacking muscle building supplements while running the same workout he ran six months ago at the same weight, I already know why nothing has changed. The supplements have nothing to enhance because there was no stimulus to support.

Now, once you have these three things dialed in, and I mean really locked in for at least 90 days, that's when we can talk about supplementation that can actually make sense.

Six things clear the bar for me, each one filling a specific gap rather than replacing a foundation. A documented deficiency on blood work, a micronutrient your diet genuinely misses, convenience while you're traveling, a prescription that blocks absorption of a vitamin or mineral, situations like these are worth building a supplement around.
